ஓர் ஊரில் பழைய வீடு ஒன்று இருந்தது. அதில் ஏராளமான எலிகள் இன்பமாக வாழ்ந்தன. ஒருநாள் பூனை ஒன்று அங்கே வந்தது. சில எலிகளை வேட்டையாடித் தின்றது.
There was an old house in which a lot of rats lived merrily. A cat came there one day. It hunted down some rats and ate them.
மறுபடியும் வந்து மேலும் சில எலிகளைக் கொன்று தின்றது. அப்பூனையைக் கண்டு எலிகள் மிகவும் பயந்தன. அவை ஒன்று கூடி ஆலோசனை செய்தன.
It came again and ate a few more rats. The rats grew afraid. They consulted among themselves.
''பூனையின் கழுத்தில் மணி கட்ட வேண்டும். திடீரென்று பூனை வந்தால் மணிச்சத்தம் கேட்டு ஓடி ஒளிந்து கொள்ளலாம்'' என்று ஒர் எலி சொன்னது.
"Let us tie a bell around the neck of the cat. When it comes, we will here the sound and we can escape" suggested a rat.
ஓர் எலி "பூனைக்கு யார் மணி கட்டுவது?" என்று கேட்டது. அந்த வேலைக்கு எந்த எலியும் முன்வரவில்லை. எலிகள் பேசிக் கொண்டிருந்தபோது பூனை அங்கே வந்தது.
"Who will bell the cat?" asked another rat. No rat volunteered to do it. Even while they were discussing, the cat came there.
எலிகள் 'தப்பித்தோம், பிழைத்தோம்' என்று தலைதெறிக்கச் சிதறி ஓடின!
The rats ran helter skelter for their lives.
